BMW and Toyota are set to team up on next-generation green technology, though the two will apparently stick to crafting a new lithium-ion battery instead of swapping diesel tech. BMW will serve up a few small-displacement diesel engines for use in European Toyota models, but it won’t supply direct-competitor Lexus with any oil-burning lumps. Right now, European buyers can expect to see 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter BMW diesel engines to show up under the hoods of certain Toyota products soon. That should help Toyota immensely in a market where 52 percent of all vehicles sold are diesels. Lexus, meanwhile, will continue to focus on plug-in hybrid and hybrid models to position itself as a niche innovation company. Automotive News reports Lexus has nailed down a European market share of just 0.2 percent over the past 11 months. Scion taking a cue from BMW, considering becoming a mobility provider?

Filed under: Scion , Toyota Scion’s youth focus has served it well in the last nine years, with nearly 80 percent of first-time buyers moving into a Toyota or another Scion when the time comes to trade in. But Toyota is keenly aware that the youth market is retracting, and thus, Scion could be used as an incubator for a new transportation initiative within the automaker. What form it takes is open to speculation, but everything from unconventional body styles to car-sharing programs could be on the table. Even bikes and trikes integrated into the vehicles are under consideration. This outside-the-box tact is something BMW is exploring with its new i Ventures initiative, experimenting with and funding new transportation programs in the United States. How Scion might expand its offerings from a standard automaker to a mobility provider remains to be seen, but considering the brand’s penchant for pushing boundaries, anything is possible. R.L. Polk: Toyota top brand considered among African-Americans
May 2, 2011 by Blogs PGI · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Chevrolet , Ford , Honda , Nissan , Toyota African-Americans purchased 641,090 new vehicles in 2010, accounting for 7.4 percent of all new vehicle sales. That’s a significant portion of overall sales, and a population segment that Toyota appears to be winning over. R.L. Polk released a study showing that Toyota accounted for 15 percent of all new car sales to African-American car buyers last year. Ford came in second at 11.7 percent, followed by Chevrolet , Honda and Nissan . The top five automakers accounted for nearly 60 percent off all new vehicle sales to African-Americans. The U.S. Census Bureau predicts that the African-American population will grow by 25 percent by the year 2030. In 2010 alone, auto sales among African Americans rose by 11.5 percent versus 2009. That’s 68.6 percent faster than the non-ethnic market increase of 6.8 percent, meaning that automakers would do well to reach out to this burgeoning customer segment.
